BIDWELL, Ohio — Coal Grove scored five touchdowns in the second quarter, helping the Hornets spoil senior night for the Raiders at River Valley in a Week 7 Ohio Valley Conference game in Gallia County.
Just over three minutes into the first quarter, the Hornets’ Sidney Tucker rushed for a five-yard touchdown and an unsuccessful PAT, lifting Coal Grove to a 6-0 lead.
Two minutes later, after forcing an interception pass from River Valley’s Dayton Hardway, D.J. Miller rushed for a 19-yard touchdown. A successful two-point conversion by Sidney Tucker allowed Coal Grove to jump out to a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
At the 9:57 mark of the second quarter, Coal Grove’s Jesse Rigsby connected to Issiah Gunther for a one-yard touchdown pass. A successful PAT by Jonathan Joseph gave the Hornets a 21-0 lead.
River Valley answered back with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Dayton Hardway to Austin Bradley, and a successful PAT by Devin McDonald whittled the Hornets lead to 21-7.
With 6:34 remaining in the first half, Sidney Tucker rushed for a nine-yard touchdown and a successful two-point conversion by D.J. Miller, Coal Grove is ahead of the Raiders 29-7.
Two minutes later, Austin Bradley had a one-yard touchdown run and another successful PAT by Devin McDonald allowed River Valley to pull back to within 29-14.
Austin Ruggles returned an 80-yard kickoff touchdown return and a successful PAT by Jonathan Joseph gave the Hornets a 36-14 lead. With 1:45 left in the second quarter, Mark Wray rushed for an eight-yard touchdown and a successful PAT by Devin McDonald allowed the Raiders to pull to within 36-21.
With 32 seconds left in the first half, Sidney Tucker rushed for a two-yard touchdown and a successful PAT by Jonathan Joseph gave Coal Grove a 43-21 lead. Twenty-four seconds later, the Hornets’ Jesse Rigsby connected with Conor Markins for a 58-yard touchdown pass and a PAT by Jonathan Joseph — giving CGHS a halftime lead of 50-21.
In the third quarter, the only points came from an eight-yard touchdown run by Mark Wray and a PAT by Devin McDonald, allowing River Valley to trim the deficit down to 50-28.
At the 9:27 mark in the fourth quarter, Jesse Rigsby rushed for a two-yard touchdown run and a PAT by Jonathan Joseph gave Coal Grove a lead of 57-28. With four minutes left in the game, Ian McFarland rushed for a seven-yard touchdown run and an unsuccessful PAT, allowing the Hornets to wrap up the 63-28 decision.
Dayton Hardway led the Raiders in passing with 11-for-32 for 181 yards, one TD and three interceptions. George Williams was 0-for-1 for zero yards. Mark Wray led the team in rushing with eight carries for 36 yards and two touchdowns.
Austin Bradley had six carries for 24 yards and one touchdown. George Williams had three carries for eight yards. Justin Arrowood had four carries for four yards. Dustin Bickers had three carries for three yards. Josh Campbell had two carries for three yards. Dayton Hardway had two carries for negative five yards.
Kirk Morrow led the team in receiving with three receptions for 46 yards. Austin Bradley had three receptions for 40 yards and one touchdown. Mark Wray had two receptions for 26 yards. Tyler Twyman had one reception for 38 yards. Dustin Bickers had one reception for 21 yards. Nick Jeffers had one reception for 10 yards.
Devin McDonald was 4-for-5 in PAT kicks. The Raiders had a total of 20 first downs and a team total of 73 rushing yards. The hosts were 11-of-32 passing for 181 yards, throwing one touchdown and three interceptions. RVHS also had a team total of seven penalties for 45 yards.
Jesse Rigsby led the Hornets in passing with 6-for-12 for 153 yards and one touchdown. Sidney Tucker led the team in rushing for 18 carries for 119 yards and four touchdowns. D.J. Miller had 10 carries for 63 yards and one touchdown.
Issiah Gunther lead the team in receiving with three catches for 28 yards. Joe Akers had two receptions for 67 yards. Conor Markins had one reception for 58 yards and one touchdown.
The Hornets had a team total of 22 first downs and a team total of 276 rushing yards. The guests were 6-for-12 passing for 153 yards and had one touchdown. CGHS also had 12 penalties for 130 yards.
River Valley (1-6, 0-2 OVC) will go on the road for a Week 7 matchup at OVC opponent Rock Hill.
