RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Orlando Zapata scored a pair of goals and Mike Burney’s header into the net snapped a halftime and lifted the University of Rio Grande to a 3-1 win over Aquinas (Mich.) College, Saturday night, in men’s soccer action at Evan E. Davis Field.

The win was the second in a row for the fourth-ranked RedStorm after an upset loss in their season opener at St. Xavier University eight days earlier. The Saints slipped to 1-2-1 with the loss.

Zapata, a junior forward from Medellin, Columbia, gave Rio a 1-0 lead at 16:15 of the opening half, taking a pass from sophomore midfielder Caio Cruz a firing a shot past Aquinas keeper Mike Sweers.

The Saints tied the game at 26:55 when Tyler Fischer picked off a ball that Rio senior keeper Jack Marchant failed to clear cleanly and found the back left corner of the net.

That’s how things stayed until Burney, a senior defender/midfielder from Annandale, Virginia, scored on a header—via an assist by senior defender Brodie Steigerwald — just under five minutes into the second half.

The RedStorm, who were playing their home opener, maintained the lead the rest of the way, with Zapata scoring an unassisted marker as time expired to set the final score.

Rio Grande outshot the Saints, 15-6, limiting Aquinas to just two shots following the intermission.

Marchant had two saves in the winning effort for URG, while Sweers was credited with five stops in a losing cause for the visitors.

The physical contest featured 25 fouls – 13 whistled against the Saints and 12 against the RedStorm—to go along with six yellow cards and a pair of red cards. Aquinas’ Billy Cremeans and Cruz were both ejected after an incident in front of the Saints’ bench with 5:04 remaining in the match.
