RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Taylor Ahrens scored two goals and assisted on another, while Alex Davis had four assists to help the University of Rio Grande cruise past West Virginia University Tech, 5-1, Wednesday evening, in non-conference women’s soccer action at Evan E. Davis Field.
The RedStorm snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory, improving to 5-7 overall.
WVU Tech suffered its sixth straight loss and slipped to 2-10.
Rio Grande outshot the Golden Bears, 12-1, in the opening half en route to a 4-0 lead at the intermission.
Freshman forward Kasey Crow got the scoring underway just 5:51 into the contest, scoring her team-best ninth goal of the season off assists from junior defender Mary Beth Schramm and Davis, a junior forward.
Davis let fly with a corner kick which Schramm headed in front of the goal and Crow headed the ricochet into the net past Tech goal keeper Bridget Leach.
Ahrens, a freshman midfielder, scored off of another corner kick by Davis 32:29 remaining in the half and the duo teamed up yet again 5-1/2 minutes later to extend the RedStorm lead to 3-0.
Sophomore forward Allana Shelton scored off of a feed from Ahrens with just over 20 minutes left in the opening stanza to make it 4-0.
Senior defender Katie Fuller scored her first goal of the season – and just the second of her career – from just outside of the box after a pass from Davis in the left corner with 29:25 left in the match, pushing the cushion to 5-0.
Davis’ four assists in the win give her a club-high seven for the season.
The Golden Bears avoided a shutout after an unassisted marker by Creshana Jones at the 70:19 mark.
Junior goal keeper Hannah Stickelman picked up her first win of the season in four decisions for Rio, recording three saves in the process.
Leach had 10 saves in a losing cause for Tech, which was outshot 17-7 for the game.
Rio Grande returns to action next Tuesday, when it travels to rival Shawnee State for a Mid-South Conference outing. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. in Portsmouth.
