POMEROY — Spring athletic coaches were hired, and a contract with Ohio University for an athletic trainer for the 2013-14 year was approved at Tuesday night’s meeting of the Meigs Local Board of Education.

Hired were Jason Mullen and Mike Kloes, volunteer baseball coaches; David Kight, head junior high track coach; Mike Chancey, assistant track coach;and Dreama English, volunteer assistant track coach. Action was taken to table the hiring of Shawn Hawley as the assistant junior high track coach, and Ron Hill as varsity assistant track coach, both of whom had been recommended by Mike Kennedy, head track coach.

Other personnel matters handled included hiring Ryan Francis as a substitute teacher for the current school year, accepting the resignation of Yvonne Young as a substitute secretary effective immediately, and accepting the resignation of Carol Evans for retirement purposes as a teacher at the Meigs Middle School, effective June 1, 2013.

A donation of art supplies to Meigs Middle School in the amount of $502.88 from the Athens Local Professional Artists and Craftsmen Association as requested by Melanie Quillen, Middle School art teacher, was acknowledged.

The contract with Ohio University for next school year’s athletic trainer at a cost of $10,400 was approved by the Board. Also approved was a three-year master services agreement proposal with SC Strategic Solutions, LLC for professional imaging software and management services for selected school records in the minimum amount of $1,995 per year.

The Board also approved the cancellation of the Internet access service agreement with the Southeastern Ohio Voluntary Education Cooperative for the period from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2017 as approved last year, and approved on with the company for the period July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014.

The Board heard a report from Christy Musser on the food service program. She reported meal participation in the district as remaining between 90 and 91 percent. She noted that the elementary school has seen a slight decrease in participation, while the high school middle school has a slight increase. She also reported on the fruit and vegetable program at the elementary school and announced that the schools awarded grants will be announce in May. Commodity ordering will be finalized for next school year this week. This year, commodity dollars to Meigs was $54,478 which she said equates to a projected total food cost savings of almost 15 percent in the district.

Meeting with the board were family members of a student who allegedly was involved in an altercation with another student at Meigs High School on Feb. 12.

Asking to be heard in open session, they gave details of the altercation, their dissatisfaction with how it was handled by school personnel, the punishment handed out with the student being removed from the classroom for 10 days and placed in the alternative school, and the effect the entire incident has had on the youth. They came to the Board to request further investigation into the incident and how it was handled, and received assurance from the Board president Roger Abbott that it would be “investigated further.”

At the Board meeting which was followed by an executive session for hiring personnel and compensation of personnel were Superintendent Rusty Bookman, Treasurer/CFO Mark Rhonemus, and Board members, Ryan Mahr, Larry Tucker, Ron Logan, Todd Snowden and Abbott.
