MIDDLEPORT — Middleport’s annual Christmas parade is set for 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 5.

Poochie Brewer is parade chairman again this year, and she said she is now taking calls from entrants in the parade. The parade will line up at 4 p.m. at Dairy Queen. Walking and marching units, floats, holiday entries and equestrian units are invited to participate, she said. No pre-registration is required, but Brewer said she is happy to discuss arrangements at 416-2343.

The parade will be the first opportunity to see the new holiday lighting displays the Middleport Community Association plans. For the first time, Dave Diles Park and its restored freight depot will be lighted for Christmas, and so will the Farmers Bank park on North Second Avenue.

Local merchants are getting into the act, too. Many Middleport shop windows are already ablaze with lights and holiday displays. The community association has completed its decorating work, and the village is expected to lend manpower and equipment for the more complicated street decorations.

According to Brewer, Santa Claus has confirmed he will appear in the parade this year, although his mode of transportation is always a surprise until the end of the parade. In the past, he has ridden in vintage cars, an antique firetruck, a current Middleport fire engine, and a horse-drawn carriage.

After the parade, Santa will meet with youngsters at Peoples Bank, which always offers free photos and light refreshments.

The Middleport Ministerial Association will hold its annual tree-lighting and carol service at 4 p.m. on the “T,” and the community association will offer free carriage rides in the village from 3 to 4:15 p.m.
