COLUMBUS, Ohio — A combined total of 19 local athletes from Gallia and Meigs counties were selected to the 2009 Associated Press Southeast Ohio District football teams for Divisions II-VI.
There were six area teams represented at the southeast Ohio district meeting in Athens. Three schools — Southern, Eastern and South Gallia — were part of the Division VI draw, while both Meigs and River Valley were D-4 squads. Gallia Academy was the lone Division III school represented from the area.
Of the 19 local honorees, 10 of those were first-team selections while nine more were named honorable mention. Meigs County also had 10 honorees in comparison to nine from Gallia County, with River Valley being the lone school not to have a first-team representative on the list.
Starting in Division VI, there were a total of 10 selections — seven first-teamers and three honorable mentions — from the Ohio Valley Publishing area.
Eastern — which finished 6-4 overall — had five honorees — the most of any of the six schools — with four of those selections ending up on the first team. The quartet of first teamers were seniors Mike Johnson and Jeffrey Milhoan, as well as juniors Brayden Pratt and Klint Connery. Johnson, Pratt and Connery were all offensive selections, while Milhoan was the lone defensive selection.
Junior Tyler Hendrix was also an honorable mention pick for the Eagles.
Southern — which finished 5-5 overall — had three honorees in all. Both Sean Coppick and Taylor Lemley were first team selections, with Coppick being selected on offense and Lemley being picked for defense. Greg Jenkins was also an honorable mention pick.
South Gallia — which finished the season 3-7 overall — had two selections. Brandon Harrison was a first team honoree on defense and Dalton Matney was an honorable mention pick.
In Division IV, there were a total of six selections between Meigs and River Valley — including two first-teamers.
The Marauders — who finished 5-5 overall — had both of those first-team selections in seniors Jeremy Smith and Caleb Davis. Smith was selected as a first-team running back for the second consecutive season, while Davis was named to the first-team defensive line for the first time.
Meigs also had a pair of honorable mention selections in seniors Jacob Well and Tanner Hysell.
The Raiders (1-9) also had two honorable mention honorees in Division IV with seniors Chad Smith and Harry Smathers.
Gallia Academy — which finished 2-8 overall — landed three players on the D-3 list. Defensive lineman Jared Gravely was the lone first-teamer selected — his second straight year of first team honors — for the Blue Devils, while seniors Nate Allison and Kyle Dingess were selected as honorable mention picks.
Honorable mention selections were not divided into offense and defense.
The AP district teams were selected by a panel of sports writers from the Gallipolis, Athens, Marietta, Ironton, Jackson, Chillicothe, Circleville and Portsmouth newspapers.
