THE PLAINS — The Gallia Academy wrestling team brought home third-place honors this past Sunday at the 2010 John Deno Classic Wrestling Invitational held at McAfee Gymnasium on the campus of Athens High School.
The Blue Devils finished the day with 251 team points, placing behind only champion Athens (417) and runner-up Nelsonville-York (276.5). There were a total of 10 teams at the weather-shortened event that was originally supposed to consist of 21 varsity programs.
GAHS had 10 grapplers place in the top-eight of 14 weight classes, although the Blue and White did not have a competitor in either of the 103-, 112-, or 285-pound divisions. The Devils also came home with a trio of first-place efforts individually and one runner-up.
Seniors Chris McDermitt and Jared Gravely, as well as sophomore Brandon Taylor, all captured top honors in their respective weight classes by going unbeaten in five matches.
McDermitt defeated Garrett Wireman (Fairland) by a 9-2 decision to win the 145-pound division championship, while Gravely won the 215 category with a 15-6 majority decision over Jacob Coon (NYHS) in the finals. Taylor won a round-robin in the 160-pound division for the championship.
Ben Saunders just missed out on becoming the fourth GAHS champion, earning second in the 152-pound division with a 4-1 overall mark. Saunders’ lone loss came in the championship final against Zach Mays of NYHS. Mays won by a 20-5 technical fall.
Matt Watts (135) and Zach Tackett (171) both brought home third-place efforts in their respective weight classes with matching 4-1 marks. Joel Craft (119) placed fourth overall with a 3-2 mark as well.
Jonathan Caldwell finished fifth in the 130-pound division with a 3-2 mark, while Briggs Shoemaker finished sixth in the 189 category with a 2-3 record. Eric Gardner (125) rounded out the top-eight placers with an eighth-place effort of 1-4.
John Faro went 0-2 overall and did not reach the top-eight competition in the 140-pound weight class.
John Lezear of Athens was named the Most Valuable Wrestler for 2010 after going unbeaten in the 125-pound weight class.
Both Meigs and River Valley were supposed to compete at the event, but withdrew due to the inclement weather.
