TUPPERS PLAINS — Going in, it was undisputed. Coming out, it was unblemished.

The Eastern boys basketball team wrapped up its Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division championship in grand style Saturday night, completing a perfect 10-0 league run during a convincing 70-55 victory over visiting Federal Hocking at the Eagle’s Nest in Meigs County.

The Eagles (18-1, 10-0 TVC Hocking) became the first team to go unbeaten in league play since Federal Hocking repeated the feat during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 campaigns. The Green and White also captured their first TVC Hocking crown since 2002, the last of their league three-peat.

Eastern never trailed in the contest, storming out to a 15-9 advantage after eight minutes of play. The Lancers (9-10, 4-6) never came closer the rest of the way, as the hosts exploded for a 23-7 surge in the second canto — allowing the Eagles to take a 38-16 cushion into the intermission.

Eastern led by as many 26 points on three separate occasions in the third quarter, the last of which came with 4:15 left in the period at 49-23. FHHS closed the canto on an 11-3 run, cutting the deficit to 52-34 headed into the finale.

The Maroon and Gold trimmed Eastern’s lead down to 12 points (65-53) with 1:15 left in regulation, but the hosts closed the final 75 seconds on a 5-2 spurt to wrap up the 15-point triumph.

Eastern also claimed a season sweep of Fed Hock after posting a 59-52 win in overtime back on January 19 in Stewart.

The Eagles connected on 23-of-53 field goal attempts for 43 percent, including 2-of-13 from three-point territory for 15 percent. EHS also outrebounded the guests by a sizable 32-21 margin, including an 11-8 edge on the offensive glass.

Mike Johnson led the Eagle attack with a game-high 21 points, followed by Jake Lynch with 12 and Kelly Winebrenner with nine markers. Brayden Pratt and Devon Baum both chipped in seven points apiece, while Kyle Connery added six to the winning cause.

Tyler Hendrix contributed four markers, while the duo of Titus Pierce and Jonathan Barrett rounded out the scoring with two points each. EHS was 22-of-31 at the free throw line for 71 percent.

Tyler Thompson paced the Lancers with 19 points, followed by Brendon Torrence with 11 and Ryan Rex with eight markers. FHHS was 13-of-17 at the foul line, 18-of-57 from the field overall and 6-of-24 from three-point territory.

Federal Hocking salvaged an evening split with a 35-32 victory in the junior varsity contest. Matt Whitlock led the JV Eagles with a game-high 13 points, while Jon Skidmore paced the JV Lancers with eight markers.

Eastern — which finished the season ranked sixth in the Division IV AP poll — now turns its attention to postseason play. The top-ranked Eagles will play eighth-seeded Ironton Saint Joseph in a D-4 sectional semifinal at Wellston High School on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m.
