ATHENS, Ohio — A total of 31 people from both Gallia and Meigs counties — 15 boys, 14 girls and two head coaches to be exact — were selected to the Associated Press All-Southeast District Basketball teams for the recent 2009-10 campaign.
The district squads are selected by a panel of area AP sports writers and the teams are based off of season stats and team results, all of which are divided into first, second, third and honorable mention teams that are separated by division.
From the six schools in the Ohio Valley Publishing area — Gallia Academy, Meigs, River Valley, Southern, South Gallia and Eastern — there were a total of 16 players who earned accolades in the top three teams of their respective divisions.
Eastern High School led the way with 10 nominees, including both coach of the year selections in Division IV. John Burdette was the unanimous selection in girls after leading the Lady Eagles to an 18-2 regular season mark, while Howie Caldwell joined Steven Ater of South Webster as the co-coaches in boys after an 18-1 effort this season with the Eagles.
Both teams also finished the regular season ranked in the final AP poll. The Lady Eagles were eighth, while the Eagles finished the year sixth.
Eastern had two first team selections in seniors Jake Lynch and Kasey Turley, with the trio of Kelly Winebrenner, Mike Johnson and Emeri Connery all earned second team accolades. Both Winebrenner and Johnson are seniors, while Connery just finished her junior campaign.
Eastern senior Audrionna Pullins was also a third team selection, while senior Titus Pierce and junior Allie Rawson both came away with honorable mention accolades.
Southern, South Gallia and Gallia Academy all had five selections between boys and girls, with Southern being the lone school to land a first-team nominee.
The Tornadoes (14-5) were led by senior Sean Coppick as a first team honoree, followed by senior Cyle Rees on second team and senior Michael Manuel on the third team. Dustin Salser was also an honorbale mention selection for the boys, while senior Cheyene Dunn was the lone Lady Tornado (3-17) to be selected — earning an honorable mention spot.
South Gallia landed three players on the third team in seniors Hailee Swain and Brandon Harrison, as well as sophomore Chandra Canaday. Senior Jasmine Waugh and sophomore Dalton Matney were also honorable mention selections for the 11-8 Lady Rebels and 9-10 Rebels.
Gallia Academy land only one player — senior Allie Troester — in the top three teams, while seniors John Troester and Amy Noe and juniors Ethan Moore and Morgan Daniels all came away with honorable mention selections. The Blue Angels were 11-9 this past winter, while the Blue Devils finished this past winter with a 7-13 mark.
Both River Valley and Meigs had three players selected to the district squads.
The Raiders (4-16) had two selections in senior Cody McAvena and junior Cody Smith, while the Lady Raiders (7-13) were represented by junior Brooke Marcum. McAvena and Marcum both earned third team honors, while Smith was an honorable mention selection.
Junior Morgan Howard was the lone Meigs player to crack the top three teams, coming away with second team honors for the 10-10 Lady Marauders. Junior Miranda Grueser was an honorable mention selection, as was sophomore Jesse Smith for the 1-19 Marauders.
