POMEROY — The Meigs Soil and Water Conservation District will hold its 73rd annual meeting, banquet and election on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. at Meigs High School, with the election of one supervisor beginning at 6 p.m.

The winner will be elected to a three-year term on the Meigs Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors commencing January 2017. Candidates include Bill Baer and Michael Warner, both of Racine.

Baer is a retired teacher and principal who raises and sells alfalfa hay to area horse farms and for his own horses. He and his wife, Jean, reside in Sutton Township. Warner is an insurance agent and part-time farmer. He and his wife, Sheila, also reside in the Forest Run community in Sutton Township.

The Meigs SWCD, established in 1943, is a legal subdivision of state government that provides natural resource management assistance to county landowners and other units of local government. The district is funded by the Meigs County Board of Commissioners, and county funds are supplemented by funding from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The district is governed by a five-member board of supervisors, all county residents. Board members serve staggered three-year terms. Current supervisors include: Joe Bolin, Rutland; Bill Baer, Racine; Tonja Hunter, Racine; Keith Bentz, Racine; and Tony Carnahan, Syracuse.

Voting will take place that evening before the annual meeting from 6-7 p.m. Residents or landowners, firms and corporations that own land or occupy land in Meigs County and are 18 years of age or older may vote for supervisor. A non-resident landowner, firm or corporation must provide an affidavit of eligibility which includes designation of a voting representative prior to casting a ballot.

There are three ways an eligible voter can cast a ballot: at the annual meeting, at the SWCD office from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. up to an including the day of the election, or via absentee ballot. Absentee ballots can be requested by Oct. 7 at the Meigs SWCD office at 113 East Memorial Drive, Suite D, Pomeroy OH 45769 and must be received back at the office no later than 3 p.m. on Oct. 13.

The dinner begins at 7 p.m. Annual meeting registration costs are $14 per person this year and must be purchased by Oct. 6. For more information or to purchase tickets, call the Meigs SWCD office at 740-992-4282.
