RACINE — The Southern Local School District recently conducted a teacher orientation at Star Mill Park, a gesture to welcome the new teachers in to the community.

Treasurer Roy Johnson welcomed the group and provided an informational session on purchasing procedures in the district.

Southern has 10 new teachers on the roster for the 2014-15 school year. Teachers include Leslie Dunfee, Kevin Porter and Jordan Pickens — all special education intervention specialists; Sharon Gant, first grade teacher; Megan Hendrix, second grade teacher; Ashley Zielinski, kindergarten; Calee Pickens and Nicole Hoover, high school science; Dan Watson, seventh and eighth grade math; and Dina Dyer, high school English.

Speaking at the event were Superintendent Tony Deem and administrators Daniel Otto, Kent Wolfe, Tricia McNickle and Scott Wolfe. Other members of the welcoming party were board president Denny Evans, EMIS director Tim Thoren, guidance counselor Andrea Cline; and SLEA union president, Ann Ohlinger. Also on hand was assistant treasurer Christi Maidens.

Not only was the group versed in school policy and procedures, but many words of advice were passed along as well. The group was treated to a meal compliments of the administration.

School for Southern Local students begins Aug. 21.
