Meigs beats Belpre

BELPRE — Jeremy Smith and Jacob Well closed out outstanding high school careers in leading the Meigs Marauders to a 41-0 win over Belpre Friday evening at Ralph Holder Field.

Well became Meigs High School all time leading passer by passing Jeremy Phalin, and Smith carried 27 times for 196 yards and scored four touchdowns.

The Marauders finished their season at 5-5, 3-2 in the TVC, winning their last four. While Belpre finishes their season at 0-10, 0-5 in the Ohio Division. Belpre will become a member of the conferences Hocking Division next season.

Meigs scored the games first touchdown at the 7:56 mark of the first period when Smith crashed over from five yards out. Well’s kick was true and the Marauders had a 7-0 lead.

Meigs forced Belpre to a four and out, Smith fielded the Belpre kick at the Marauder 45, and took it the distance for the score. Once again Well added the extra points to give the  Marauders a 14-0 advantage with 5:34 left in the period.Belpre went for it on fourth and five with the Marauders holding and taking over on downs.

On first down Well hooked up with Caleb Davis who made a beautiful over the shoulder catch as he was sliding to the turf for 29 yards to the Belpre 18. Well then found Zach Sayre on the next play from 18 yards out and the score. Once again Well’s kick was good and Meigs was on top 21-0 with 9:39 left in the half.

Meigs added another score with 1:06 left in the half with Smith scored from five yards out. Well made it 28-0 with the kick The score was set up by a 16 yard pass from Well to Jeffrey Roush. That pass gave Well 3,361 passing yard for his career surpassing Jeremy Phalin (89,90,91) as the Marauders all time leading passer.

Meigs scored at the 5:08 mark of the third period when Smith scored his fourth touchdown of the night from a yard out. The kick was no good, but the maroon and gold held a 34-0 lead. That score was set up when Well hooked up with Sayre 33 yards to the Belpre one, Smith scored a play later.

The Marauder closed out the scoring with 9:33 remaining in the contest when Cody Laudermilt scored from 12 yards out, Well added the extra points for a 41-0 Marauder win. That score capped off a 14, play 86 yard drive.

“I’m so proud of these kids,” Marauder coach Mike Chancey said. “Especially the seniors, for the effort and hard work and dedication to the team. These kids have stuck together and continued to get better and play hard all season. I would also like to thank my assistant coaches for all their time, hard work and dedication to the kids.”

Eight seniors played in the maroon and gold for their final time in their career. They include Smith, Well, Laudermilt, Cody Williams, Tanner Hysell, Tyler Brothers, Colby Hayes and Caleb Davis.

Smith had 196 yards in  27  carries to lead all rushers, Smith finished with 1,460 yards for the season. Laudermilt added 61 in eight. Well was five of 17 in the air for 109 yards giving him 1,197 for the season and 3,392 for his career.

Sayre caught two passes for 51 yards, Davis two for 42 and Roush one for 26.

The Meigs defense held Belpre to only five first downs and 1.3 yards a carry on the ground. Erik Waderker led Belpre with 53 yards in 22 carries, Tyler Carr added 13 in four carries. Waderker was three of nine in the air with an interception for 25 yards, Brody Parrish failed to complete his only attempt. Parrish and Dylan Markham each had an reception for 10 years each.
