MIDDLEPORT — A new storage building is under construction at the corner of Park and Page Streets in Middleport to house several pieces of specialized equipment to be used for cleaning and maintaining the new sewer lines which have been installed in the village.

The cost for the construction of the new building and the equipment is a part of the original $7.5 million sewer project funded with grant money and forgiven loans awarded to the village.

The 30x46 foot building being constructed by the general contractor on the sewer line project is expected to be completed within the next few weeks.

Equipment which has already arrived includes a large leaf sweeper truck for use in cleaning out areas filled with debris and reaching into places where brushes can’t go, according to Faymon Roberts, village solicitor. He added that the goal is to keep leaves and other debris from getting into and clogging up the sewer lines and obstructing the flow of water or other content.

A fascinating piece of the new equipment coming to the village at no cost is an outfit which includes a snake with a camera on the end which can be inserted into a sewer line to locate where there is a clog obstructing the flow of water. Whatever the camera in the sewer line picks up is projected onto a screen which gives village employees a location which they can confirm with another separate piece of equipment. This eliminates having to dig up a large section of the street to locate a clog to having only to disturb a small portion to reach and remove whatever is causing the problem.

The purpose of the new building, which will be dry and heated, is for storage of the village’s new equipment which is a part of taking care of the new sewer system.

In addition two large generators are coming for the sewer lift stations, along with a jet vac to do sewer cleaning and track hoe equi9ment.

While funding for some of the equipment was written into the original grant, other pieces are being paid for through some money saved by the construction money as the project moved forward.
