Southern Elementary first grade teacher Dawn Hill helps students as they use iPads to help with the learning of math skills.
RACINE — The use of technology in the classroom took a big step forward this school year in the Southern Local School District.
The district recently purchased 200 iPads to be used in the kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms.
Southern Elementary Principal Scott Wolfe stated that the iPads are being used in the classrooms instead of workbooks. Wolfe added that workbooks often do not match up with the standards being taught in the classroom, but due to the cost teachers felt the need to use the books if purchased.
The iPads allow for apps to be downloaded which match exactly to the standards taught in the classroom.
Each class, kindergarten to second grade, has an iPad for each student to use on a daily basis.
Teachers can chose apps that meet their particular classroom needs to be downloaded. Once the app is downloaded on one of the iPads in the classroom, the iPad is synced with the rest of the set, according to first grade teacher Dawn Hill.
Hill stated that her class uses the iPads to assist with math skills.
Wolfe said that the iPads provide a good academic tool and a technology tool for the students. The use of technology also helps to achieve the 21st century skills recommended by the Ohio Department of Education.
Wolfe said the district plans to purchase additional iPads for the other grades in the future as funds are available.
