TUPPERS PLAINS — One final event in the year long “Cause We Care” program was the Hair Donation Station held during Friday’s Mini Relay for Life at Eastern Local Schools.

More than three dozen students, staff, parents and community members took part in the hair cutting event with donations going to Pantene Beautiful Lengths.

Twenty-three Eastern Elementary girls and one Sophomore boys donated their hair to the program. Several parents and teachers also took part, with five boys also shaving their head for cancer awareness.

Participants in the hair donation station were challenged to grow their hair out and donate at least eight inches of their hair to the project which makes wigs for women with cancer.

In addition to the length requirement, hair had to be free of permanent color, bleach or other chemical treatment, and could not have more than five percent gray.

Estimates are that more than $1,500 was raised through the Mini Relay for Life events.

Those participating received a t-shirt, certificate and a goodie bag.

Prior to the hair cutting, Wendy Pierce and Connie Osborne spoke to the students about their personal battles with cancer.

Pierce thanked the students who were donating their hair, telling them how much it was appreciated by her and other women who have had cancer.

More traditional Relay for Life events took place on the track, which was lined with luminaries in memory of those lost to cancer, or in honor of someone who is currently battling or has battled cancer.

Butterflies were also placed one the hillside in front of the school with the names of the donors written on them. “It is our hope that the field of butterflies will serve as a reminder of cancer awareness and to also honor and memorialize those who have been affected by cancer,” stated event organizers.

Throughout the week, students were allowed to “Dress Up” by paying 25 cents per day. Dress up day themes were camo day, hat day, wacky day, decade day and wear purple to support Relay for Life.

Plans are to make the hair donation station part of the annual Mini Relay for Life event next year, with people encouraged to begin growing their hair now.

All money raised through the events benefits the American Cancer Society
