ONA, W.Va. — Another first in a year full of them.

After putting together its first full season with both a boys team and a girls team, the Point Pleasant cross country program advanced a total of three athletes — including one from each squad — to the 2015 state meet following Thursday night’s Class AAA Region IV championships held at Cabell Midland High School in Cabell County.

Both the Black Knights and Lady Knights finished last in the team scores in their respective competitions, but each squad did manage to earn at least one at-large bid for next week’s Class AAA race. It marks the first time in school history that both programs will be represented at the CC state championships.

The Black Knights finished eighth out of eight teams with 197 points, but they had two boys get out of regionals — another first for the program. Senior Hunter White advanced by placing 21st overall with a time of 18:59, while freshman Luke Wilson also advanced with a mark of 19:07.

Tanner Durst (23:17), Brandon Henderson (23:31), Wyatt Dean (23:44) and Brandon Hall (26:24) respectively placed 51st through 54th, while Byron Fisher was 57th out of 58 runners with a time of 30:44.

Will Sheils of Cabell Midland won the boys race with a time of 16:14. CMHS posted a perfect team score of 15 to win the Region IV title, while Winfield (56) and Hurricane (75) also advanced to the state level as teams.

The Lady Knights were sixth out of six teams with 150 points, but freshman Cierra Beatty earned the last state at-large bid by placing 29th overall with a time of 25:59. Teammate Allison Henderson was the first runner to miss the cut after finishing 30th with a mark of 26:04.

Karson Bonecutter (26:59) was next for PPHS after finishing 32nd, while Macy Adkins (27:19) and Makinley Higginbotham (38:28) respectively placed 34th and 45th overall.

Savannah Huff of Winfield defeated the 45-runner field with a winning mark of 20:00. Cabell Midland won the Region IV girls title with 41 points, while Hurricane (45) and Winfield (50) also advanced to the state level as teams.

The 2015 WVSSAC cross country championships will be held Saturday at Cabell Midland High School, with the first race slated to start at 10 a.m.
