MERCERVILLE, Ohio — Banged up, but victorious.

The Federal Hocking boys basketball team took it to host South Gallia early, but the Rebels ultimately took the contest over the Lancers 73-49 in a Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division match-up on Tuesday night in Gallia County.

South Gallia (3-1, 1-1 TVC Hocking) started the contest with a lay-up from Kane Hutchinson less than a minute into the first quarter. Federal Hocking (1-3, 1-1) proceeded on a 9-0 run, led by A.J. Cobb’s seven points.

The Rebels regained their footing thanks to a bucket from Joseph Ehman at the 3:09 mark. The Red and Gold finished the period on a 5-0 run, but still trailed the visitors 11-10.

After a Jared Hawk three-pointer, South Gallia poured on the offense with an 11-0 run that took over much of the second quarter. Walker Church ended the run for the Lancers with a bucket, but Ehman responded with a basket of his own. Randy Lantz netted a lay-up with 20 seconds to go in the half, but the home team took a 28-21 lead heading into halftime.

South Gallia outrebounded their rivals 17-to-9 in the first half. Both teams shot 75 percent from the free throw line, but the Rebels netted nine more shots from the charity stripe.

The Red and Gold began the third quarter on a 9-2 run, lead by four points from Landon Hutchinson. Cobb gave the Lancers a brief 6-0 run offensively. DJ Drenner scored back-to-back buckets at the 3:42 mark. Curtis Haner’s three from beyond the arc put an exclamation mark for South Gallia in the third period.

Both teams brought the offense and defense in the fourth quarter. Federal Hocking’s 11 rebounds briefly kept the Rebels offense at bay, but it didn’t last for long. The home team’s 12-2 run — lead by six points from Ehman — in the period put the game to rest.

The Rebels finished shooting 26-of-53 (49 percent) from the field — including 15-of-28 from the free throw line — while connected on 16-of-48 (33.3 percent) field goals. South Gallia had a 30-to-23 advantage in rebounds and 14 takeaways.

Ehman and Landon Hutchinson led the Red and G0ld with 17 points, followed by Kane Hutchinson with 13 points. Drenner finished with 11 points. Haner had six points, while Caleb Henry had three points. Josh Henry and Dominick Johnson each had two points, while Austin Stapleton and Colton Bowers each contributed one point for the Rebels.

“Federal Hocking came in and played really hard like we knew they would,” South Gallia coach Larry Howell said. “We played hard. We made some adjustments and executed well in the second half. The kids had done what we asked starting on the defensive end and we rebounded well. We actually finished our shots in the second half after missing a lot in the first half.”

Cobb led the Lancers with 19 points, followed by Ryan Harvey with 13 points. Lantz finished with six points, while Hawk and Deakin Dickerson had three points apiece. Church and Michael Johns each contributed two points, while Brandon Gould had a point for Federal Hocking.

Both squads will meet again on Jan. 19 in Stewart. The Rebels will face TVC Hocking foe Southern on Friday in Racine. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
