THE PLAINS, Ohio — Fans of the defense were certainly in for a treat.
The Athens girls basketball team never allowed double digit points in any quarter and claimed a 35-25 victory over non-conference guest Point Pleasant, on Saturday afternoon inside McAfee Gymnasium.
The Lady Bulldogs (2-12) jumped out to a 9-4 lead after the opening period, and the hosts pushed their lead to 18-11 by halftime. Athens outscored Point Pleasant (1-14) by a 11-to-5 clip in the third period, pushing the AHS advantage to 29-14 headed into the finale. The Lady Knights ended the game on a 9-to-6 run, but it was too little, too late and Athens claimed the 35-25 victory.
The Lady Knights were led by Michaela Cottrill with seven points and six rebounds, followed by Skylar Woodall and Peyton Campbell with five points each. Morgan Roush posted four points, four assists and three steals, while Lanea Cochran and Hannah Smith rounded out the PPHS scoring total with two points each.
The guests shot 3-of-7 (42.9 percent) from the free throw line and 11-of-36 (30.6 percent) from the field, including 0-5 from three-point range. As a team the Lady Knights marked 21 rebounds, five assists, eight steals, one blocked shot and 25 turnovers.
Athens was led by Alexis McCollum with 12 points, followed by Sophia Miller with six. Taylor Gregory and Kat Kroutel each scored four points, Lauren Abdella added three, while Emma Harter, Lilly Mills and Katie Johnson each scored two points in the win. Kroutel led the victors on the glass with seven rebounds, while McCollum had a game-high five assists.
The Lady Bulldogs shot 5-of-10 (50 percent) from the charity stripe and 14-of-44 (31.8 percent) from the field, including 2-of-18 (11.1 percent) from beyond the arc. The Green and Gold posted 28 rebounds, 11 assists, nine steals, one block and 19 turnovers.
Point Pleasant will look to snap it’s three-game skid on Tuesday, when PPHS visits Cabell Midland.
