CHESHIRE, Ohio — Two weeks since its last win, and exactly one week after it last played, the River Valley High School baseball team got two proverbial birds with one stone on Wednesday.
That’s because the Raiders returned to the diamond, and rallied from a 2-0 deficit to Nelsonville-York to double up the visiting Buckeyes 4-2 in a Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division tilt at Cheshire Field.
The Raiders last played on Wednesday, April 6, then had two TVC-Ohio games against Meigs (Friday, April 8) and Wellston (Friday, April 11) rained out.
River Valley also saw its home non-league doubleheader against Eastern cancelled last Saturday.
With the win, the Raiders also snapped a five-game losing streak since opening the season at 3-0.
River Valley is now 1-2 in the TVC-Ohio, as Nelsonville-York fell to 3-5 — and 0-4 in the league.
Prior to Wednesday, the Raiders had swept Eastern Brown in a non-league doubleheader on March 26, then won at Oak Hill two days later.
The Buckeyes scored one run apiece in the opening two innings, but the Raiders rallied with a single marker apiece in the second and third.
In the fourth, River Valley scored twice for the 4-2 lead, which held up over the final three frames for the win.
Both pitchers went the distance and allowed nine hits, although Austin Ragan of River Valley got the victory while stranding eight Buckeye baserunners.
Five of them were in scoring position, including in the seventh — when Maiden led off with a single and reached third.
Ragan walked two and struck out three, as 56 of his 83 total pitches went for strikes.
He faced four Buckeyes apiece in innings four and seven, retiring the second, third and fourth-hole N-Y hitters to end the game.
Hunter Dobbs pitched for Nelsonville-York, walking none and striking out five as all four Raider runs were earned.
Nelsonville-York scored in the first when Maiden led off with a walk, stole second, and scored on an RBI-single by Ted Campbell.
With two outs in the second, Levi Lent was awarded first base on catcher’s interference, stole second, and scored on an RBI-single by Shakim Williams.
From there, though, Ragan kept the Buckeyes off the board — as Campbell and Tyler Smith singled in the third, followed by a Lent double and another Williams single in the fourth.
Reece Robson singled in the fifth for N-Y, as Chaffin singled and Hunley walked back-to-back in the sixth.
The Raiders trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the third — when Ragan singled and later scored on a steal of a home.
In the second, River Valley forged the 2-2 tie — as Dustin Barber doubled to lead off, then scored a batter later on a single by Dillon Ragan.
The Raiders took the lead in the fourth — when Austin Ragan led off with a single, then scored on an RBI-double by Brycen Brumfield.
Brumfield crossed two batters later when Jack Farley singled him home.
Bailey Rhodes in the second and George Williams in the third were the only other Raider basehits.
Dobbs retired the Raiders 1-2-3 in the first, fifth and sixth stanzas.
The Raiders returned to TVC-Ohio action on Thursday — with their makeup matchup at Meigs.
River Valley returns to the road, and returns to TVC-Ohio play, tonight (Friday, April 15) at Vinton County.
