LOGAN, Ohio — A win is a win, no matter how it looks.
The Gallia Academy baseball survived a late rally by Southeastern Ohio Athletic League host Logan, on Tuesday night, and the Blue Devils escaped Hocking County with a 10-9 victory.
Gallia Academy (11-6, 2-3 SEOAL) scored three runs in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of two hits, two walks and one LHS (1-11, 0-5) error. The Blue Devils were held to just one hit over the next two frames, but scored four runs on five straight hits and one walk, in the top of the third.
Trailing 7-0, the Chieftains began chipping away at the deficit with four runs on one hit and two errors, in the bottom of the fourth.
The Blue and White manufactured two runs without the benefit of a hit in the top of the fifth inning, expanding the lead to 9-4. However, the Blue Devils lead was cut to 9-7 in the bottom of the fifth, as Chase Walter hit a three-run home run.
Gallia Academy added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, as Braden Simms scored on a Matt Bailey sac-fly. Logan started the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back hits, and both runners scored later in the frame. With two-outs and the potential game-tying run at second base, the Blue Devils got the strikeout they needed to secure the 10-9 victory.
GAHS junior Jeremy Brumfield earned the pitching victory, after allowing seven runs, four earned, on seven hits and two walks, in 4.1 innings. Blue Devils senior Ryan Terry pitched 2.2 innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks. Terry struck out three, while Brumfield fanned one batter.
Jakob Kline suffered the pitching loss for the Purple and White, surrendering nine runs, six earned, on eight hits and four walks, in 4.1 innings. Gage Sisek pitched the final 2.2 innings for LHS and he allowed one unearned run on three hits. Both Chieftain pitchers recorded one strikeout.
The Blue Devil offense was led by senior Eric Ward, who was 3-for-3 with one double, two singles, one run scored, one RBI and one stolen base. Anthony Sipple singled twice, scored once and drove in three runs, Tanner Allen singled twice and scored once, while Kole Carter singled once, scored twice and had one RBI.
Bailey finished with one single, one run scored and two RBI in the win, Simms singled once and scored once, Brumfield added one single, Terry and Josh Davis both scored once and stole one base, while Ty Howell scored one run for the Blue Devils.
Sisek, Colton Stilwell and Lane Little each had two hits for the Chiefs, while Walter, Brendan Karns, Denny Powers and Joseph Duffy each marked one hit. Walter had a team-best three RBI, followed by Duffy with two. Stilwell and Little each scored once in the setback.
Both teams committed three errors and left eight runners on base in the tilt.
This marks the season sweep for GAHS, as the Blue Devils claimed an 11-1 mercy rule victory on April 8. Logan has not defeated Gallia Academy on the diamond since 2005.
After a meeting with South Point on Wednesday, GAHS will return to action on Thursday, when Fairland visits Centenary.
