ROCKSPRINGS, Ohio — A strong finish leads to a great start to the postseason, for the Lady Marauders.

The top-seeded Meigs softball team claimed an 11-1 victory in five innings over ninth-seeded Marietta, after the Maroon and Gold scored six runs in the final frame of Wednesday night’s Division II sectional semifinal, at Dreams Field.

After back-to-back outs to start the bottom of the first frame, Marietta (5-23) walked three straight Lady Marauders (20-5) to load the bases. A Marietta error, followed by two more walks, allowed Meigs to take a 3-0 lead in the opening stanza.

Marietta — which was retired in order in the top of the first — pushed one run across in the top of the second, as Shannon Haessly singled and then scored on an error. Meigs got the run right back in the bottom of the second, however, as Peyton Rowe was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Lady Marauder lead grew to 5-1 in the bottom of the third inning, as Bre Colburn scored on a Taylor Swartz sacrifice-fly. Meigs was held scoreless in the fourth frame, but the Lady Marauders held Marietta hitless in the top of the fifth.

Morgan Lodwick reached on an error to start the home half of the fifth, and she scored on the Lady Tigers’ second error of the frame. With one out and the bases loaded, Alliyah Pullins blasted a three-run double, pushing the hosts’ lead to 9-1. After a failed fielder’s choice, Pullins scored on a sac-fly by Rowe.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Danielle Morris singled home Katie Gilkey, capping off Meigs’ 11-1 mercy rule win.

Meigs junior Maddison Woodyard earned the pitching victory for the Maroon and Gold, allowing one unearned run on two hits and one walk. Woodyard struck out three batters in five innings of work.

Marietta senior Shayla Lamp — who pitched 4.1 innings and suffered the loss in the record books — allowed 10 runs, six earned, on five hits and 10 free passes.

Pullins led the Lady Marauders at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two doubles, two runs scored and three runs batted in. Swartz singled once, scored once and drove in one run, Colburn singled once and scored twice, Lodwick had one hit and one run scored, while Morris marked one hit and one RBI for the victors.

Rowe finished with two runs batted in for Meigs, Gilkey scored twice and drove in one run, while Devyn Oliver and Sadie Fox both scored once in the win.

Haessly singled once and scored once to lead the Orange and Black, while Shaelynn Hutchison added one hit.

Marietta committed five errors in the setback, while Meigs had just one defensive mishap.

The Lady Marauders will advance to Saturday’s Division II sectional final, and they will host fifth-seeded Waverly, which defeated fourth-seeded Chillicothe by a 6-0 final at CHS on Wednesday.
