IRONTON, Ohio — Two invitationals in, and already two top-two finishes for the Gallia Academy golf team.

That’s because the Blue Devils, on Monday at Ironton Country Club, captured the team championship of the annual Ironton Invitational.

The Blue Devils’ “A” squad fired a team total of 339, which topped the field of the other seven Ohio Valley Conference clubs — along with a Gallia Academy “B” team, runner-up Fairview (Ky.), Jackson and Alexander.

Each team fielded four players, as the Blue Devils divided their eight men on Monday into an “A” team and “B” team.

Gallia Academy’s top four players made up its victorious “A” team, as the same four Blue Devils had their scores count as part of their runner-up performance at Friday’s Vinton County Invitational.

Only Portsmouth, with only two players, did not post a team score.

And, the Blue Devils defied the odds somewhat on Monday, as all four of their individual scores did not land any of the five spots on the all-tournament team.

However, all four Gallia Academy cards in the 80s combined for the best team score.

Kaden Thomas led the Blue Devils with an 81, while Taae Hamid and Josh Davis dialed up for a pair of 85s.

Miles Cornwell carded an 88 at Ironton.

The Blue Devils, entering their second season of golf in the OVC, are the defending conference champions — and got a first-hand look at the other seven league schools.

Fairview finished with a 351 for second-place, followed by Coal Grove (353) and Jackson (354) for third and fourth.

Four OVC schools — Chesapeake (381), Fairland (388), Rock Hill (404) and host Ironton (413) — finished fifth thru eighth, while Gallia Academy’s “B” team was next with a 428.

Alexander shot a 452 and South Point an even 500 to round out the team scores.

The Blue Devils’ “B” team included Jeremy Brumfield with a 93, Braden Simms with a 106, Reece Thomas with a 110 and Ian Evans with a 119.

Derek Lemley of Chesapeake fired a 70 to claim medalist honors, and led the all-tournament team which featured three other scores in the 70s.

Rounding out the all-tournament team were Trevor Deere of Chesapeake with a 74, Logan Reed of Rock Hill with a 75, Tanner Manning of Fairview with a 77, and finally Jared Lemaster of Jackson with an 80.

The other three Jackson scores were Ricky Fraley with an 81, John Bachtel with a 93 and Ethan Mercer at an even 100.
