CAIRO, W.Va. — There were no team scores, but the Point Pleasant cross country team still had seven runners compete in the 2016 Ritchie County Invitational held Saturday at the Cokeley Athletic Complex at North Bend State Park.
The Black Knights had four runners compete in the 18-team, 176-participant boys race, while the Lady Knights had three entrants in the 11-team, 118-participant girls event.
Short on numbers due to Homecoming being on the same night, Point Pleasant went on to put up some respectable individual efforts from those who did make the trip.
Luke Wilson had the highest finish of any PPHS runner at the event, placing 24th overall in the boys race with a time of 18:24.62. The next Black Knight participant to cross the finish line was Wyatt Dean, who placed 143rd with a mark of 22:49.15.
Tanner Durst (23:16.34) finished 152nd overall in the boys event, while Isaac Daniels was 158th with a mark of 24:01.36.
Seth Backus of Braxton County won the boys individual contest with a first place effort of 17:03.60. Mark Ellis of East Fairmont was the overall runner-up with a mark of 17:24.69.
East Fairmont won the boys team title with a score of 86 points. Parkersburg South (101), St. Marys (106), Elkins (116) and Ritchie County (130) rounded out the top five spots in the field.
On the girls side, Allison Henderson was the top Lady Knight placer — finishing 34th overall with a time of 23:26.46. Tanner King (30:08.62) ended the in 105th place and Tayllor King was 106th with a mark of 30:42.18.
Jessica Melvin of Philip Barbour won the girls race individually with a time of 19:43.46. Olivia Underwood of Elkins was the overall runner-up with a mark of 20:04.00.
Philip Barbour won the girls team title with a score of 67 points. Parkersburg South (91), East Fairmont (96), Doddridge County (115) and Elkins (117) rounded out the top five team positions.
