PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — The Southern Tornadoes took to the links for the final time this season on Monday —and finished ninth out of 10 teams in the Division III district golf tournament at the Portsmouth Elks Country Club.

Southern, having advanced to the district meet following its fourth-place finish in the sectional meet, shot a team total of 385 — ahead of only Huntington (391) by six single strokes of the 10 clubs competing.

Unfortunately for the Tornadoes, only the top two teams — and top two individuals not on a qualifying squad — advance to the state meet.

Those were a pair of Adams County clubs —West Union at 330 and North Adams at 342.

Adena (359) edged Waterford (361) for third, while Southeastern (370) clipped Chesapeake (375), Coal Grove (378) and Manchester (381) for fifth.

The Tornadoes’ top three players all posted scores in the 90s — as junior Jonah Hoback and sophomore Jensen Anderson each fired a pair of 92s.

Hoback had a 43 on the front nine holes and a 49 for the back, while Anderson amounted a pair of 46s.

Sophomore Jarrett Hupp had a 48 on the front and a 46 on the back for an 18-hole total of 94.

The top four scores counted towards the team total, as sophomore Ryan Acree added the fourth counting card with a 107.

Senior Tanner Thorla, in his final match on Monday, was the non-counting score with a 110.

Individually, Chesapeake senior Derek Lemley landed a smooth 76 to capture medalist honors —and punched his ticket to his second straight state meet.

Lemley turned in a 39 on the front side, followed by a 37 on the back.

The other individual qualifier was Broc Jordan of Western, who shared medalist runner-up honors with West Union’s Elijah McCarty with a 79.

All of the other 57 individual scores were 81 or higher, including the two lone individual players from Peebles and Lynchburg-Clay.

Peebles’ Bostin Ribinson shot an 82, while Lynchburg-Clay’s Eric Mclaughlin mustered an 86.

The Tornadoes of 2016 say goodbye to three seniors —Thorla, Eli Hunter and Ashley Acree.
