CHESHIRE — AEP Ohio’s Gavin Plant will host a full-scale emergency management “mock disaster” drill on Saturday, March 28, from 8:30 a.m. to noon on the plant property in Cheshire.

More than 20 local, state and federal agencies and businesses will participate in the drill authorized by the State Emergency Response Commission (SERC).

During the drill, the Ohio Highway Patrol will close State Route 554 in Cheshire. The Patrol will direct local traffic to Roush Lane around the drill area. State Route 7 will remain open.

“The purpose of the drill is to coordinate the efforts of emergency responders and support organizations in order to be prepared for an actual event,” said Bob Byer, director, Meigs County Emergency Management Agency (EMA). “The SERC requires each county to conduct a full-scale drill once every four years.”

Emergency management agencies from Meigs, Gallia and Mason (W.Va.) counties will participate in the event and coordinate emergency responders from their respective areas. The Ohio Emergency Management Agency will coordinate evaluators who will assess the effectiveness of drill participants.

The mock disaster drill will involve a chemical spill on the edge of plant property near the Village of Cheshire. Persons who monitor police and fire radio transmissions will hear communications from the drill prefaced with the notation, “This is a drill. This is an exercise.”

“We want to make this as realistic as possible,” said Mike Null, Gallia County EMA director. “Our objective is to be as prepared as we possibly can for any potential disaster.”

Organizations participating in the drill include: the Middleport, Pomeroy and Gallipolis fire departments; Gavin Plant fire brigade, security and rescue teams; Meigs, Gallia and Mason county emergency management agencies and emergency medical services; Meigs and Gallia county health departments; Gallia County Red Cross; Meigs County Citizens Corps; Holzer Hospital; Ohio Highway Patrol; Gallia County Sheriff; Life Ambulance; U.S. Coast Guard; Gallia County 911; Meigs County EMS dispatchers; Ohio Emergency Management Agency; Cheshire Baptist Church and various volunteer victims.
