This is a letter in support of The Meigs Local Enrichment Foundation’s achievements and efforts to get the badly needed sports facilities built for Meigs Local School District.
This group of intelligent and energetic young people took the initiative and worked many, many hours to accomplish something that was only hoped for since 1968 when Meigs consolidated. They did all of the groundwork and raised $2 million out of the $3 million needed to complete the project. The rest was going to be up to us. We were going to vote whether or not we would be willing to do our small part. I’m disappointed that we don’t get that choice.
Our school district is struggling financially. The economy is bad. Times are tough. So why spend money on sports? To do nothing is reactive. It is proactive to do something positive to help the situation. This project would bring in revenue by holding our own band competitions, track and cross country meets. We could charge, as other schools do, admission to baseball and softball games. The facilities could be rented out to other school districts to hold their events. This facility would be something our students and community could take pride in and it would certainly attract more people and industry into our area. Our school district, in fact, our county would benefit.
Thank you, MLEF, for your hard work, sacrifice and determination. You have 2 million reasons to keep going and I believe the other 1 million will be coming aboard to see this project through!
