Avalon G. Roush, 89, of Gallipolis, passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2009, at the Holzer Senior Care Center.

She was born on May 27, 1920, in Gallipolis, daughter of the late Sylvan Goodrich and Caroline Handley Gardner. She was married to Lew W. Roush on May 25, 1962, and he survives her. Avalon was a 1938 graduate of Gallia Academy High School. She was an office assistant at the Farm Service Agency and was a homemaker. She was a charter member and past president of the Emblem Club. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Riverside Study Club and the Cheshire Garden Club.

Surviving are her husband, Lew W. Roush of Gallipolis; one daughter, Mary (Phil) Pope of Gallipolis; four stepdaughters, Myra Roush and Louellen (Jeff) Zaharko, both of Pittsburg, Pa., Jane (William) Bird and Kay Roush, both of New Haven, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Bob (Jennifer) Foster, Joe (Melinda) Foster and Amanda (Stuart) Thompson; three step grandchildren, Aaron French, Timothy Bird and Sarah (Benji) Black; six great grandchildren, Taylor, Megan, Mandy and Morgan Foster, Rhett and Alaina Thompson; one sister, Edna Jane Lanier of Berea, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

Avalon was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Nelson P. Gardner, Sylvan H. Gardner and Columbus “Jack” G. Gardner; and three sisters, Hester Igleheart, Louise Sando and Mary Stormont.

Services will be held at noon on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Tim Luoma officiating. Entombment will follow in Ohio Valley Memory Gardens, Chapel of Hope Mausoleum. Friends may call at the Willis Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. Pallbearers will be Bob Foster, Joe Foster, Phil Pope, Stuart Thompson, William Bird, and Timothy Bird.
